Review: Can Steaz replace my 3:00 coffee fix?

Not sure how much I've blogged about my passion addiction love of coffee here but those who follow me on Twitter know I make a pot 'o Joe just about every afternoon. I love the bold, rich taste and I make it sweet so it cures that craving too. Plus, I perk up and can power through homework and dinner.

I have a new suitor.

His name is Steaz

A few weeks ago I was invited to join some fabulous bloggers at Whole Foods in Silver Spring, MD for a lovely dinner and an introduction to Steaz - part soda, part tea.

Steaz are low in calories (some zero calorie and sweetened with all-natural Stevia)

Steaz are made from tea

Some are bubbly

Some give you energy***

They are all-natural, organic and made with Fair Trade teas

I also learned that founder, Eric was raised in a completely organic household and the poor guy probably had to deal with kids making fun of him while he ate his seaweed chips and tofu during lunch, but his mother made him this promise:

"One day it will be cool to be organic"

And that mother of his gave him the strength to look those bullies with the partially-hydrogenated, orange-puff stained fingers in the eye and say, "Yea! At least no bully wants to steal my lunch!"

Wait, that might not be entirely true because I only heard parts of the story as I was busy sipping Steaz and eating some yummy vegetarian dishes but you get the point.

Steaz are cool. They are so much better for you than soda and they taste great! And they can also give you a little kick around 3:00.

***I'm talking about my new love:

The other day I replaced my cofee with one and I loved it! It gave me a little kick without the upset stomach I sometimes get with too much coffee. It took the edge off the sweet craving and I sailed through homework and cooking dinner. And I didn't have the I-forgot-to-empty-the-coffee-grinds mess I usually have each morning. And with that, I've rambled on enough. Now I need to grab a Steaz.

Disclosure: I received a fun visit with some local blog friends, free samples of Steaz as well as yummy food from Whole Foods. As if that weren't enough I got a cute little goody bag that had more Steaz and some organic beauty supply samples. All opinions here are mine and the part about Steaz founder, Eric, as a kid is made up based on the parts I heard him say because I was truly engrossed in drinking his Steaz. This post was not reviewed (obviously or there would have been some decent editing) nor approved prior to posting.

Review & Giveaway: Win FREE YoCrunch 100 Calorie pack with Truvia

A while back I reviewed Truvia as an alternative to Spenda and regular sugar...specificaly, in my coffee.

It never occured to me that someone would be smart enough to add Truvia (an all natural sweetener made from the best parts of the stevia plant) to things like yogurt.

I have all but stopped eating yogurt because the non-fat versions all use artificial sweetners that leave a bad taste in my mouth. But Truvia, to me, tastes good.

I was sent samples of the YoCrunch 100 Calorie pack vanilla yogurt with Truvia and with little bits of Oreo cookie crumbles.

And besides the little pill I take with it (Yes, I'm old. Please don't tell the 18 year old Janine what's in store for her. She'll just roll her eyes anyway.) ...I tasted only the yogurt, not the sweetener!

Plus, it was easy to know that it's a good snack because the folks at Breyers have already weighed and measured it and know it's 100 Calories. Easy!

YoCrunch 100 calorie packs come in these flavors:

  • Cheesecake Yogurt with Graham Cookie Pieces
  • Strawberry Yogurt with 100% Natural Low Fat Granola
  • Vanilla Yogurt with Chocolate Chip Cookie Pieces
  • Vanilla Yogurt with Chocolate Crème Cookie Pieces
  • Vanilla Yogurt with Nestle® Buncha CrunchTM Candy Pieces

Now it's YOUR turn to try YoCrunch 100 calorie yogurt for FREE!

I'm giving away 10 coupons (to 10 people) to try a YoCrunch 100 calorie pack for FREE!

And everyone gets 4 entries to win.

1. Leave a comment telling me your favorite yogurt and if you have ever tried Truvia

2. Subscribe to via email

3. Tweet a link to this giveaway (leave the URL for the tweet in a comment)

4. Click on the Like It, Share It button below and post it to your wall or email 3 friends (cc scarytwins {at} Yahoo {dot} com)

Be sure to leave your email in the comment form (no one else sees it) so I can contact you if you win. Giveaway open to US residents 18 and over and ends Friday, April 9th at 11:00 pm ET. Winners will be chosen using and notified via email.

Thanks and good luck!

Review: it's a tall order, but can Healthy Choice keep me sane?

I don't diet.

I like food. I like to eat. I get really cranky and irrational silly if I don't get to eat. (Just ask my mom about the time I freaked out while shopping for my wedding dress. It had nothing to do with the stress of shopping but it had everything to do with her lack of mothering skills and thus the lack of a simple granola bar for the BRIDE to help take the edge off hunger pains). Lesson learned.

It's a good thing Healthy Choice found me.

I work outside of my home a few days a week and these are my choices within walking distance: McDonald's, Jerry's Subs, Pizza Hut, a Chinese restuarant and a Salvadoran restaurant. None of these offer great low-cal choices. Plus, when I AM good (steamed chicken and broccoli no sauce, brown rice) it starts to get expensive. So what usually happends is I wait, and wait, and wait until I'm completely losing my mind from hunger and ripping of people's heads to eat!

Enter Healthy Choice. Thanks to the folks at H.C. for supplying me with a few frozen samples and some coupons so I can stock these at work and avoid turning into Mrs. Hyde.

Here's one I recently tried:

Healthy Choice entree just 250 calories

What I like about Healthy Choice

1. Selection - check out this dizzying selection, and note there is a new line of Cafe Steamers that come in their own microwavable DuoTray Steamcooker.

2. Nutrition - Healthy Choice entrees have a balance of whole grains, fiber, protein, and antioxidants. They are low in fat and saturated fat, have a controlled amount of sodium, and contain no preservatives. I sat in on a Healthy Choice sponsored conference call last year and I remembered learning that Healthy Choice is the ONLY brand that can call 100% of it's products 'healthy' as defined by the FDA.

3. Cost - Healthy Choice entrees have a suggested retail price from $2.00 to $3.29. Can't beat that!

What I'm not crazy about with Healthy Choice

I actually left this out above but it's my blog so I can put it here, I really like the taste of Healthy Choice. My only issue is that many of the entrees leave me hungry. I always have to supplement these with a side salad, piece of fruit, and a chocolate chip cookie cup of tea with exactly one tablespoon of honey.

Have you tried Healthy Choice lately?

Review: GoGo SqueeZ - making school lunches got a little easier.

I dread the start of school and being a slave to school lunches. I resist buying the 'snack' size foods because they usually have too much sugar, salt, or preservatives and things that I can't pronounce

Recently I had the opportuniyt to try GoGo squeeZ squeezable, resealable, 100% fruit & applesauce snack.

Here's what I like about the GoGo SqueeZ snacks:

no spoon needed

I resist using plastic utensils for school lunches as much as possible because I'm a greenie in some ways and so for applesauce I give the Twofer real spoons that sometimes come home but always leave the inside of their lunchbox sticky. I mean, can't they lick it off?

 healthy and all-natural

Here's the list of ingredients for the apple-strawberry flavor: apple, strawberry, banana, apple juice concentrate, blackcurrant

No added sugar, or malthedexah;adjf;ksdhjf or hiuoieruwnfsd <-- stuff I can't pronounce.

neat, portable, non-perishable

That means it can sit on my pantry and I can grab one whenever i need it! No need for cooler thingies taking up room in the lunch box, and a perfect snack for the 'snack time' they have in their classroom (yes, our school does this for the younger kids and grades that eat later).

For more information on GoGo Sqeez products including where to buy you can visit their website, their blog, follow them on Twitter, and find them on Facebook.

What products help you make better school lunches?
