Review: Hanging with Twitter Friends at Jaleo Tapas Bar in Bethesda

Jaleo Bethesda is a fun and tasty way to gather with friends. Next time, join us!

I still know how to hone in on a great happy hour.

Good thing I didn't have to hone too much recently.

Twitter friends Julia and Greg suggested a Tweetup at Jaleo and thus was formed the Totally Informal DC Tweetup. Somehow this all started around my birthday and some of my other twitter friends Amy, Jessica and Jodi were talking about how I was jipped on my birthday because the power went out and we should get together.

Or maybe I was doing all the talking whining <-- call a spade a spade.

Anyway, my name got tapped for this shindig so I hosted the RSVP on my blog (if you people clicked the ads more I might not have to do that, ahem) and somehow people started refering it as mine.

For the record, a tweetup is never mine. It's OURS.

I digress.

Jaleo was a gracious host for our Happy Hour Tweetup!

image via Jessica's Yfrog and food via Jaleo YUM!

First of all they gave us $4 tapas and $4 sangria!

Wait, everyone gets that?  Oh.  It's called Jaleo Hour and you can get it too.

Moving on, Chef Paul brought out some spectacular things that I won't even try to pronounce or type but I will kindly Link Here to AMusingFoodie's Blog so you can see all the photos and correct names and bring them to the restaurant so you know what to order.

And seriously - order the endive things, the potatoes with that special sauce, and the fritatta thing which is like a layerd egg and potato thing that's not really a fritatta.

Jaleo Bethesda Celebrates the BIG ten-oh! (10 year anniversary)

For the month of February Jaleo Bethesda is celebrating their 10 year anniversary with a special prix fixe menu of tapas and dessert for just $30! They also have a special cocktail but I never moved beyond the sangria so I can't vouch for it. The sangira though? YUM!

Thanks to everyone else who came!

PunditMom, Delora, CiaoMom, MikeSchaffer (sans his Awesome shirt) and his lovely wife (honey I hope you got enough to eat cause we were plowing through those plates).

I'll be celebrating my 40th birthday all month all year so there is still time to join us!

Disclosure: all opinions are my own and I was not compensated in any way for this post or for my visit to Jaleo. We paid our way and sometimes folks, the totally-informal-non-sponsored events rock. Also, I love my Twitter friends. That is all. Move along now. Nothing else to see here

The Melting Pot with the Ladies - You had me at Cheese and Chocolate

Last week I was invited to The Melting Pot fondu restaurant for a blogger meetup to enjoy the new ladies night menu package.

Sure, twist my arm.

I enjoyed myself so much I completely forgot to take any photos of the first course.

But I can tell you..I thoroughly enjoyed the cheese fondu, the salad, and then the meat and vegetable course:

dumplings, chicken, shrimp and beef prepared to be dunked

bubbling coq au vin fondu to cook the meat with mushrooms and broccoli

And {gulp} dessert. Seeing this is making me hunger all over again.

fruit, gourmet marshmallows, brownies, and krispy rice treats for the cholocate

We enjoyed the Ladies Night Out package at The Melting Pot

  • Sunday through Thursday for groups of 8 or more
  • four-course meal for only $30 per person
  • your choice of cheese fondue, salad, Girls’ Night Out entrée, and chocolate fondue
  • only available at Gaithersburg (MD),  Dupont Circle (DC), Reston & Arlington (VA) locations

(for better photos of the food and the evening visit my friend Lolli's website)

It's a great way to enjoy some quality time with friends from your neighborhood, playgroup, or even if your college buddies are in town. Fondu means you enjoy a leisurly meal with plenty of time to chat and learn new things. For example, I was able to catch up with my crush, Lindsay. Then touch base with savvy businesswoman Stacy. I had a good laugh with Sandie, Leticia, and Kim over some naughty things. But as Devra observed to Susan, Jean and I, "Some fondu, some don't."

I'm glad these friends are the kind that fondu.

Thanks Jessica and The Melting Pot for hosting us!

Discloure: I enjoyed the evening at The Melting Pot at no cost and I received a goody bag and a card for $10 off my next visit. All opinions expressed here are my own and this post was no reviewed nor approved prior to publishing.

Giveaway: Haiti Relief Necklace (and the opportunity to help)

** Winner UPDATE**

The winner of the Haiti Relief Necklace is......Leticia Tech Savvy Mama

Let's just start this off with a photo, shall we?

Haiti Relief necklace by Studio Jewel

A good bloggy/twitter friend of mine happens to be an amazing artist and metalsmith. She has a store full of beautiful pieces and each one makes me drool.

But Lisa has a heart as well, and when it speaks to her, she listens. This time it told her to create something that can help those affected in Haiti.

We need to SURROUND those impacted by this disaster with HOPE - thus the significance of the silver circle encompassing the hope disk. It will take our faith, our hope and our love to feed their emotional needs...but it will also take our hands. We need to use WOOD, STONE and METAL, as seen in the individual beads, to rebuild what has been lost - to rebuild lives torn apart. We must LINK together, as represented by the silver chain, as a people united in order to serve others and share our HOPE for a new and better future.

Then she offered to send me one, and have me give one away on my blog! I wore it the other night (photo does NOT do it justice) and got tons of compliments.

May092009 has my head swirling with ideas!

First and foremost, I'd like to that and my blog friend JessicaKnows for an afternoon of pampering in honor of Mother's Day and Moms Night Out 2009.

Second, I thought Whrrl was cool when I saw Jessica's stories but now that I've done my own I'm completely hooked!

Below you will see my latest Whrrl story (this widget will continue to change):

It's like mini blogging but I can do it all from my phone! And I don't even have an iPhone! I can use SMS prompts or whatever you call it to send text and picture messages to create a story.
SMS looks like this:
# Janine's day of pampering
@ some location with a spa
POST Look what I got to do!
PHOTO (send pic attached to this mssg)
POST Look how happy I am
PHOTO (attach another picture)
POST Thanks Jessica you RAWK!
LEAVE (ends the story)

In addition to Whrrl, Joey Totes gave us each a 3-pack of reusable bags and you already know how much I love my Joey Totes! Plus Jessica had Whrrl t-shirts and mini Ford Flex cars for all of our kiddos (she thinks of everything).

Don't forget my manicure and pedicure. I certainly won't forget it because it's going to last me until next Mother's Day when I'll finally get another one!

So now my mind is whrrling and twrrling around all the fun ways I can use whrrl to document events in my life. Watch out - a story is just a Whrrl away!
