Safe Windows for Kids and Design Options from Next Day Blinds

This is part 2 is a series of posts where I take you through the process of choosing window treatments with the help of a Next Day Blinds in-home design consultant, Leslie Press. You can enter to win $200 to Next Day Blinds here!

Design Advice for a Kid's Room

Leslie takes me through the various options for safe window treatments for the Twins' room. I had cordless honeycomb shades from another vendor which were great but one broke and then I replaced it with a DIY one from Lowes.

We are ready for something a little more sophisticated but still very safe, and sturdy.

I was thrilled to learn about the warranty, the variety of choices, and that I wasn't stuck simply choosing a new color of the same shade I already had in there!

These are my child safe choices from Next Day Blinds:

Cordless honeycomb shades like I already had

Deisgner Leslie Press takes mesaurements of my existing cordless honeycomb shade

Cordless but colorful roller shades

Roller shades would offer a nice pop of color

Fancier roman shades on a continuous cord loop

Roman shades came in fewer color choices but a sophisticated look that is still child-safe

If you are looking for window coverings that are safe for your kids, check out the options offered by Next Day Blinds HERE. If you are in the DC area, be sure to take advantage of the FREE in-home design consultation.

And don't forget to enter to win $200 to Next Day Blinds!

What safe window option do you have in your child's room?

Janine

Disclosure: I received a set of roman shades for the girls' room at no charge from Next Day Blinds in exchange for covering the in-home consultation and purchasing process on my blog. Leslie is THAT good as you can see in the video and I only edited the end slightly to shorten it by a few minutes. I am very impressed with the quality of the blinds which you will read about in later posts. All opinons are my own and this post was neither reviewed nor approved by Next Day Blinds prior to being published.

How do you cover your windows?

Window treatments, window coverings, blinds, shades, shutters....whatever you call it, choosing how to cover windows is no easy task. Which is why I was grateful for the opportunity to work with Next Day Blinds and one of their local in-home design consultants to choose something to cover the Twofers' windows.

Step one in choosing blinds is to narrow your choices

Next Day Blinds designer, Leslie, was incredibly helpful and explains here how she starts the process with a customer. By the way, Next Day Blinds offers in-home consultation FREE as part of their service!

As you can see, Leslie knows her windows. You will see in a future post how she saved my do-it-yourself window catastrophe and gave me a do-over that not only looks much better, it's functional and safe for the girls to be around.

Enter to win $200 to spend with Next Day Blinds!

Yearning for your own window do-over? Next Day Blinds has generously offered one TwoferMom.com reader the chance to win $200 to spend on any window covering they offer! Plus, if you live in the DC area, you too can have a designer visit your home before you order so that you don't get overwhelmed by all the choices in styles, fabrics, colors, etc.

You can do one or all of these for a chance to win but be sure to leave a separate comment for each and a link to a post when possible.

The Longshots - a great movie for girls

Sometimes the best movies are the ones you catch on a late Saturday morning, curled up on the sofa, still in your jammies.

This is how I came upon 'The Longshots ' starring Keke Palmer and Ice Cube.

Who knew I'd be a huge Ice Cube fan after this?

'The Longshots ' is based on the true story about the first girl to play in a Pop Warner football playoff game. Keke Palmer plays Jasmine Plummer and spent weeks learning how to throw a football...and throw it well.

Ice Cube plays her uncle who has nothing better to do than keep an eye on Jasmine after school and ends up teaching her how to toss the old pigskin.

There is a LOT more to the story...Jasmine's dad is lame, kids at school are mean, her mom works hard, her uncle cleans himself up. I thought the story developed well, especially for kids. And the characters are believeable, and fun to watch

Why 'The Longshots' works for girls

First, there's the obvious, girls-can-do-anything lesson of course. There was also the popular-kids-can-be-mean-and-suck lesson as Jasmine suffers through being new at school. Watching 'The Longshots' with the twins provided an opportunity to discuss things like popularity and bullying, but also staying true to who you are, and being strong in the face of adversity. Also, I touched on the fact that it's not a bad thing to have some solid guy friends in your life as you get older.

The Mister thinks the biggest lesson to learn watching 'The Longshots' is Football-is-Cool, and I have to say there was a lot of cheering going on in my family room during the movie. And I swear I saw some football throwing later on that day in my backyard but I'm not entirely sure because my vision was blurred by all the clothing changes that also happened. Girls will still be girls...even during football.

What other great movies have you seen for girls?

Book Review: REAL SIMPLE new uses for old things

I just got this book for Christmas from my sister-in-law and each page gives me an 'ah-ha' moment.

I love that the items are already in my house, it's just a new way of looking at them. I may become a hoarder because now everything has a new way to be used!

For example:

Use Post-It notes to clean out a computer keyboard

Use scraps of wall paper to line drawers and shelves

Use that blue painter's tape to reseal bags of chips

Do you have a tip? I'll see if it's already in the book!

Review: Trader Joe's Candy Cane Joe-Joe's

I have never eaten a whole package of anything in one sitting - in my life.
Not ice cream.
Not cookies.
Not bon bons to play up the old clichÈ.

Until I discovered these...

Photobucket

If you haven't had them, Candy Cane Joe-Joe's from Trader Joes are like
like,
like,

Well I decided to ask my friends how they describe them to someone who has never had them.

Here's how they described Trade Joe's Candycane Joe-Joe's

"Yummy chocolate sandwich cookie with peppermint filling that has a yummy peppermint crunch"

"Thin mints on crack"

"Gone."

And my all-time fave, "The love child of an oreo and a candy cane."

Want to know more about Trader Joe's Candy Cane Joe-Joe's?

Visit Trader Joes online and see if there's a store near you.
Become a fan of Candy Cande Joe-Joe's (of course it has it's own fan page) on Facebook

But I hear they are seasonal and only available during the holidays.  You may want to stock up.

And now you know what to get me for Christmas.

Janine

Disclosure: I bought 2 boxes of Trader Joe's Candy Cane Joe-Joe's with my own money and ate one entire box myself. Well, maybe not the entire thing but pretty darn close. All opinions are my own and I have no connection to Trader Joe's other than another trip planned this week to stock up on whatever is left in the Joe-Joe's isle!
