Mending a Broken Heart and Foot by Sharing Disney Magic

So, this sucks...

The Broken Foot

It didn't start out sucking so bad. It was actually tolerable because she started out like this:

 Look - she's even smiling!

After breaking her foot over spring break, Em was in a boot for 4 weeks. Not great but at least it was removable and she could put some weight on it at the end of the month.

My Broken Heart

Unfortunately, the foot did not completely heal. So instead of taking a chance, the doctor put her in a cast for another 3 weeks.

A hard, itchy, non-removable, don't-get-it-wet, non-walkable cast for three weeks. JUST as we are preparing to surprise them with the Disney trip to the Disney Social Media Moms Conference.

I nearly broke down in tears right there.

THANK GOD we had not told them. They have been on a DSMM conference trip before. They would know far too well what they are missing. But it just didn't seem fair to drag her along when she could not fully enjoy it. And, even if you have a wheel chair at the parks, all the getting around at the airport, the hotel, and everything else would exhaust her. And me. I thought about going solo but remembered my husband was NOT going so he could get work done. Leaving the girls with him was not fair to him.

I had the tough job of relaying our bad luck to the folks at Disney who had already shipped us a little @DisneySMMoms surprise:

Yes, a gorgeous, raspberry colored 4-wheel spinner suitcase from AmericanTourister! @AmTourister on twitter if you want to follow them and definitely track the #PackMoreFun hashtag to see all the colorful bags they have.

The important folks at Disney insisted I keep the bag and because they are so generous, I decided the best thing to do is to pay it forward. It will take my mind off missing the trip, it will keep my daughter (who is bored out of her mind NOT doing any after school activities) busy helping me gather and brainstorm ways we can...

share a little Disney Magic with others less fortunate

While The Twofer are not aware they are missing out on the trip, they are Well Aware of the blessings they have received from previous DSMM trips and they actually love it when we shop for toys and things to donate. We do it a few times a year including around the holidays and back-to-school.

So, my mission this week is to fill my new American Tourister bag with goodies to donate and include a little Disney in each delivery. First up... food for Manna.

We have always collected and donated food for Manna, but The Twofer's Girl Scout troop actually had a chance to see the warehouse for the first time this year and even spent 2 hours sorting. What surprised me most was the baby food. It never crossed my mind to donate baby food but then I remembered how expensive it was. This trip I stocked up on baby food, Girl Scout cookies, and some Disney fruit snacks!

Your challenge:

Think about how you might spread a little Disney Magic this week. Think of one thing you might be able to do by Friday and share it here! I have some ideas but I can always use more.

BIG Changes Coming to Disney World

As a lucky blogger who was invited to attend the Disney Summer Social event in Baltimore I received more than some fancy Disney swag.

I got the cutest USB with all the inside information about changes coming to the home of my favorite mouse!

Fantasyland Expansion

I'm a huge fan of Magic Kingdom and especially Fantasyland with so many must-do rides including Dumbo, Peter Pan, and It's a Small World. The news that Fantasyland is going to nearly double is just a little exciting for me. Dumbo will now have two carousels and interactive games in the queue, making waiting to ride will be nearly as much fun as the ride itself!

Two new rides will take guest through Ariel's world, undersea and above, and through the Seven Dwarfs mine.

Brand New Art of Animation Resort

A new Disney resort hotel is under construction that is built around various themes of animation. This resort will have suites that can fit multiple generations of family members comfortably in rooms that bring to life favorite Disney movies including Cars, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid and Finding Nemo.

This would be a great option for a trip we take with my mom and my brother and his family.

When will all this new stuff be completed? Some of it as early as 2012 but be sure to read the Disney Parks Blog for updates, sneak peeks, photos and videos of all that's new with Disney!

Disclosure: I was not compensated to write this post but I was invited to attend a Summer Social with Disney at the Hyatt in Baltimore. We enjoyed lunch, activities, and a good bag filled with Disney treats. All opinions are my own and this post was neither reviewed nor approved prior to being published.

Disney Does VIP Drinks and Ears fit for a Royal Wedding

Last week I had the pleasure of seeing some old and new friends at an event in Baltimore with Disney.

In perfect Disney fashion we were treated with first-class service. A chance to connect, catch up, learn a little more about what's new in Disney parks (like the Star Wars ride that is calling my name), and enjoy some Disney magic.

What I love most about a Disney vacation is that Disney knows how to always make you feel special. Whether it's the vacation deals that rotate every year, the helpful staff at every hotel, even the concept of a Fast Pass - everyone gets a Fast Pass with a park ticket, but when your turn is up to ride, you feel special heading to the Fast Pass line!

So when I saw this drink machine I giggled. (I put the ears on it)

Even the girls had to ask me,

"So Mom, we just open it and take a drink?"

I think they had been looking for a slot to put the money. Sure, drinks can be displayed any number of ways - in pitchers, in tubs, or by a server. But the simple idea of being able to open what looks like a private soda machine and grab a juice or water makes you FEEL special.

These are the little ways Disney spreads magic time and time again.

I'll write another post on some of the new things to experience with Disney but for now enjoy these photos from the event.

5 Ways to Splurge for Cheap at Disney

The folks at Disney have a way of making everyone feel special. And today I wanted to highlight some things that YOU can do to enhance your experience.

Here are 5 affordable ways to 'splurge' at Disney:

Disney Stroller

Disney is so magical that it is COMPLETELY ACCEPTABLE for 6, 7, and I bet we saw a few 8 year olds riding around in the Disney-issued-lightweight-turn-on-a-dime-no-kid-gets-tired-and-cranky strollers they have available to rent at all the parks.

The Mister actually tried to climb in the double one we got for our first trip last year (Twofer were 6) and we actually pushed him about 3 feet before falling on the ground laughing.

The strollers are $15 a day for a single, and $31 a day for a double (based on current pricing listed HERE). For many parents, this is a small investment to make to know your kids will last the day and into the night, with minimal whining.

Starbucks Via TM... Guy Kawasaki

Alltop co-founder, father, Hawaiian-shirt-wearing Guy spoke to our group at the conference in February and while he said tons of great things about how to best use Twitter...this is what I remember most (without having to replay the video). He told us all about Starbucks VIA™ Ready Brew and gave us each a free sample to try!

Now, we were all staying at 'The Poly' (the cool way of referring to The Polynesian) and I was grateful that my room had a little coffee maker and coffee thingys. But the sample of Starbuck's Via from Guy was exactly how I like my coffee. Full of flavor, and just as easy to make. I made the hot water in the coffee maker, and added it to my Via along with the creamer and sugar from the hotel. mmmmmm

Visit Disney on Your Birthday

You may know that we took The Twofer last year for their 6th birthday. Last year the promotion was Free on Your Birthday and while that may not be the case this year, you can still get all kinds of free stuff if you go to Disney on your birthday. Just be sure to TELL EVERYONE!

I can't guarantee you anything, but here are some of the things you might receive if you remember to tell the staff about the birthday boy/girl:

  • free "It's my Birthday" button (go to guest services booth at the park first thing)
  • free set of reusable Disney mugs and balloons in your room
  • autographed photo post-card of Mickey wishing you a magical celebration
  • extra or free dessert at a sit-down meal
  • small individual cake and birthday card at a character meal
  • extra attention from characters

Pop Century

We stayed here on our first trip and I've heard from several others that the Pop Century is the best of the Disney Value hotels. Why? The bus only stops maybe once on the way to most parks. It has great pools, and an arcade (perfect for those rainly days) as well as little performances put on by the staff. It may not be hula lessons like at the Poly but we saw a kid parade go by and other performances the few days we were there.

Affordable Disney Florist

Most recently my brother took his kids to Disney for their first trip. They had a rough time getting down there because of a huge snow storm hitting the NY area. It was questionable whether they would make it at all! But once we knew they arrived safe and with plenty of fun ahead of them, my mom and I decided to make it truly magical and surprise them with a little something in their room from the Disney Florist.

We got them this gift for just $40.00!

Mickey's Kool Snack from Disney FloristYou can also take something like this and add Mickey Mitts or Ears for $10-$15. Be sure to ask a floral specialist when you call about customizing the gifts. Having a little surprise in your room is a great way to add a little extra magic.
