A few weeks ago I had a flat tire and would not be able to make it home in time to get The Twofer from school. I tried to reach The Mister on his cell phone but he didn't answer. So, I called my village of moms and had two offers to help.
My village of moms
My village is made up of the many moms in my neighborhood that have known my children for years either through playgroup, preschool, walking to school, or the pool. We have each others cell phones numbers programmed in. We feel just as comfortable asking for a favor as offering one. We don't keeping tabs but we know what goes around comes around.
What can you do if you don't have a built-in village?
We don't have family around and we only have one close family friend that lives 15 minutes away. If we lived in a smaller neighborhood, or one with older kids I'd have to find some other way to build my village.
One way to do this is through an online site like HiveMoms.com where you can find other moms in your area and join a babysitting co-op or playgroup. A babysitting co-op is much like my village but definitely more coordinated. If you watch someone's children you earn points, and you can trade in those points when you need a sitter. There is a co-op in my neighborhood as well and people have said it saves them hundreds if not thousands of dollars a year!
If you have a blog, HiveMoms is running a contest right now where you can win $250 cash for posting a story that relates to HiveMoms and links back to their site!
I'm curious, who's in your village and how did they get there?
