Why watching the Biggest Loser always makes me hungry

The mind is a funny thing.

As we all know, the brain is capable of playing tricks on us. Mine, in particular, is a real jokester. My brain makes me blurt out silly, often inappropriate things when I'm nervous or scared. My brain allows me to block out discussions that involve math, insurance, and Paris Hilton. And my brain often takes things that I see on TV or read in the newspaper and allows me to 'feel' them as if they were mine.

No newspaper is good news

About 2 years ago I canceled my daily newspaper delivery. There were simply too many stories about abuse, terror, murder, war, etc. I was getting palpitations with each turn of the page! I couldn't let the stories go in the recycling bin with the papers. So I decided to stop taking in the stories and I started to feel much better.

I burn calories on the couch

Watching the finale for The Biggest Loser last night, I found myself hungry and wanting to munch. How, in all my lazy couch-sitting could I be hungry as I watch people working so hard to NOT be lazy?  I think watching all these people working out, losing weight, and cooking healthy food starts to add up after 30 minutes and in my mind I'm doing all that hard work... and I get hungry.

Maybe I need to watch the show from my treadmill?

Or not.

That is stinkin' hilarious!! I think the mind focuses on what the contestants are NOT allowed to have... or maybe we think, hey, I don't weigh 300 lbs, I can totally have that chocolate cake while I watch these people...

I was tweeting about my love for Law & Order the other night. Someone popped up with the interesting and random fact that Law & Order viewers are more likely to eat more while watching TV. I suggested it was because there was an episode rerun on just about any hour of the day. She thought it might be the depressing subject matter.

I decided not to think about it and had another piece of pie. ;)
