Math...and the case of the disappearing childhood

OK, so we're in first grade. And you've already heard me complaining.
First grade is definitely not kindergarten, and I get that.
I also am starting to get that first graders, at least in my county, do not actually do first grade work. They do second grade work and SOME kids are even starting on third grade work. And I'm not just talking about kids in an accelerated class...I mean ALL the kids are already starting to learn second grade concepts.
So can someone please explain to me why they even label things first or second grade? Why not just have names for the concepts and kids will get to them when they get to them?
And seriously...they will be learning multiplication this year.
Yes, you read that right.
So get ready for more complaining...from me.
